Evaluations to Get to the Root of the Issue

Evaluations

Your evaluation is the first and most important step. It's where we figure out what's happening, why it's happening, and what we can do about it.

During the evaluation, we look at:

  • Your medical history and current concerns

  • Breathing patterns and nasal versus mouth breathing

  • Tongue mobility, resting tongue position, and lip seal

  • Strength and movement of the tongue, lips, and facial muscles

  • Swallowing patterns, posture, and oral habits

  • Speech clarity and oral function

Following the evaluation, you will receive a written report, a personalized treatment plan, and referrals to other providers if needed.

Whether you are navigating a tongue-tie, looking for treatment for a tongue-thrust, or need support for mouth breathing, speech, jaw pain, sleep issues, or swallowing, our team of myofunctional therapists is ready to help.

Let’s Talk About Myofunctional Therapy

What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Think of myofunctional therapy as physical therapy for the muscles of the mouth and face. We guide clients through targeted exercises to retrain how the tongue, lips, cheeks, and jaw work together for breathing, eating, speaking, and sleeping.

Sessions are 30 minutes and typically held once a week. We also provide home exercise programs because the real progress happens with daily practice between sessions.

For kids, we keep therapy engaging and fun.

For adults, we keep it practical and focused on results.

How Can Myofunctional Therapy Help?

Myofunctional therapy addresses the root cause of your issues to help with:

  • Improved nasal breathing and sleep quality

  • Clearer speech and reduced speech sound errors

  • More comfortable chewing and swallowing

  • Reduced jaw tension and facial pain

  • Better orthodontic outcomes

  • Breaking oral habits like thumb-sucking or nail-biting

  • Reduced snoring and improved sleep apnea symptoms

Speech & Myofunctional Therapy for Children & Teens

If your child has been in speech therapy without much progress, is experiencing breathing, sleep, or dental issues, or has been referred for a tongue-tie evaluation, myofunctional therapy may be exactly what they need.

We work with children ages 4+ and make therapy engaging and motivating with age-appropriate activities. Parents are a key part of the process, and we'll make sure you feel confident supporting your child at home with practical and manageable exercises.

Myofunctional therapy for children and teens can help with:

  • Tongue-tie and frenectomy support

  • Speech sound errors related to oral muscle patterns

  • Mouth breathing and open mouth posture

  • Oral habits like thumb-sucking, pacifier use, and nail-biting

  • Snoring, disrupted sleep, and bedwetting

  • Dental crowding, open bite, tongue thrust, and orthodontic support

  • Enlarged tonsils, adenoids, and related breathing concerns

  • ADHD and focus challenges

Speech & Myofunctional Therapy for Adults

Myofunctional therapy isn't just for kids. Adults deal with jaw pain, teeth grinding, mouth breathing, poor sleep, and speech concerns too, and these issues often have an underlying myofunctional disorder that has never been addressed.

Many of our adult clients come to us after years of searching for answers, or after being referred by a dentist or orthodontist who recognized something deeper was going on.

Adult myofunctional therapy can help with:

  • Jaw pain, clicking, and TMJ symptoms

  • Teeth grinding and clenching

  • Sleep apnea and sleep-disordered breathing

  • Mouth breathing and chronic dry mouth

  • Tongue-tie and frenectomy preparation and recovery

  • Orthodontic relapse and shifting teeth

  • Neck, head, and shoulder tension related to oral muscle patterns

  • Speech difficulties, lisps, and tongue thrust

It's never too late to get answers and feel the difference.

Specialized Speech & Myofunctional Therapy Services

Myofunctional Therapy for Oral Habits

Thumb-sucking, pacifier use, finger-sucking, nail-biting, lip biting, and mouth breathing affect more than just behavior. Over time, these habits keep the tongue from resting in the correct position, which can impact breathing, speech, dental alignment, and even overall facial development.

At Rooted Speech and Myo, we address the root cause of the habit, not just the habit itself. We use positive reinforcement, awareness training, and parent education to ensure both you and your child feel supported and confident throughout the process.

Common oral habits we treat:

  • Thumb-sucking and finger-sucking

  • Pacifier use

  • Nail-biting

  • Lip and cheek biting

  • Mouth breathing

  • Chewing on objects like hair, shirts, or pens

Tongue-Tie & Frenectomy Support

Navigating a tongue-tie can feel overwhelming, especially when you're not sure where to start. We're here to guide you through the entire process, whether you're preparing for a release, recovering from one, or trying to figure out if a release is even necessary.

Before the Procedure

Pre-frenectomy therapy prepares the tongue and surrounding muscles so the release goes as smoothly as possible. Clients who complete pre-op therapy are typically better prepared to perform post-op exercises correctly and consistently, which helps reduce the risk of reattachment and improves overall outcomes.

After the Procedure

A frenectomy releases the physical restriction, but the tongue still needs to learn how to move correctly. Post-frenectomy therapy trains new movement patterns so old habits don't come back. We walk alongside you through the healing process and make sure progress stays on track.

We collaborate closely with dentists, oral surgeons, and ENTs on timing, progress, and healing. We also connect clients with bodyworkers, chiropractors, osteopaths, and craniosacral therapists to support the body through the process.

Not sure if you have a tongue-tie? We can help you navigate that, too.

Therapy for Speech Sound Errors

When the tongue, lips, and jaw aren't resting or moving in the right patterns, it often shows up as speech sound errors. Clients often come to us after being in therapy for a while without seeing the progress they hoped for. Underlying factors like tethered oral tissues, a narrow palate, or weak tongue and lip muscles can slow progress if they're not addressed directly.

We identify and treat the root cause, so progress is efficient and lasting.

We commonly work with clients with:

  • Lisps and /s/, /z/ distortions

  • Tongue thrust affecting speech

  • Difficulty with /t/, /d/, /n/, /l/, /r/, "ch”, "sh", and "j" sounds

  • Mumbled or unclear speech
